As indispensable molecular tools in modern life-science research, fluorescent dyes are undergoing a profound transformation from serendipitous discovery to rational design.Since the German chemist Adolf von Baeyer accomplished the first artificial synthesis of a fluorescent dye-namely, fluorescein-in 1871 (Fig. 1), the scientific evolution of fluorescent molecules has spanned a long historical course [1].Over the past three decades, the number of articles published annually on fluorescent dyes has exceeded 3000; since 2011, it has consistently exceeded 5000.Today, with the deepening elucidation of photophysical mechanisms, advances in synthetic chemistry, and the continuous development of bioimaging technologies, fluorescent dye engineering has moved beyond traditional empirically driven structural modifications into a new era of conceptual innovation and precision customization.
