To evaluate long-term esophageal motor function and gastroesophageal reflux in patients who previously underwent surgical repair for esophageal atresia.
Assessed 22 patients who had primary repair of esophageal atresia 6 to 32 years prior (mean follow-up: 15 years).
Evaluated patients using personal interviews, historical barium swallow examinations, esophageal manometry, and continuous intraesophageal pH recording.
Esophageal manometry identified motility abnormalities in 21 of 22 patients, with 10 patients experiencing intermittent dysphagia for solid foods.
Intraesophageal pH monitoring identified moderate to severe gastroesophageal reflux in 13 of 22 patients, with 7 having typical reflux symptoms and 2 requiring surgical reconstruction for reflux esophagitis.
