The role of excitons in the laser action of ternary II–VI quantum wells is investigated. As a consequence of an increased stability due to localization on alloy disorder, bi-excitons are dominant up to temperatures clearly above 100 K. Steady-state pump-probe measurements reveal a bi-excitonic gain as large as 2.5×104 cm−1. Above 200 K, the threshold density grows steeply and the laser emission turns into electron–hole plasma recombination.
