Alkylferrocenes have been found to undergo disproportionation to ferrocene and 1,1′-di-alkylferrocenes in the presence of aluminium or gallium chloride. The mechanistic pathway has been shown to involve (π-ligand)–(π-ligand) exchange as opposed to the usual carbon–carbon cleavage found in benzene chemistry.
