To evaluate the influence of baseline Veterans RAND 12-item health survey mental composite scores on postoperative patient-reported outcomes following lateral lumbar interbody fusion.
Retrospective single-surgeon cohort study assessing 79 patients undergoing lateral lumbar interbody fusion stratified into VR-12 MCS < 50 (N=25) and VR-12 MCS ≥ 50 cohorts.
Tracked preoperative, 6-week, and final follow-up (mean 17.12 ± 8.43 months) patient-reported outcome measures (VR-12, SF-12, PROMIS-PF, PHQ-9, VAS-BP/LP, ODI) and minimal clinically important difference (MCID) attainment.
The VR-12 MCS < 50 cohort demonstrated significantly worse absolute scores for physical function, pain, and disability preoperatively (p ≤ 0.014), at 6 weeks postoperatively (p ≤ 0.039), and at final follow-up (p ≤ 0.046).
Patients with VR-12 MCS < 50 achieved significantly greater score improvements in VR-12 MCS and SF-12 MCS at 6 weeks and final follow-up (p ≤ 0.005 for all), alongside higher MCID achievement rates for VR-12 MCS, SF-12 MCS, and PHQ-9 (p ≤ 0.006 for all).
