The synthetic sex pheromone, Orfamone®, in white or blue Sectar® traps was as effective as liquid bait composed of a brown sugar solution + terpinyl acetate for indicating maximum activity of the oriental fruit moth and was easier to use. The numbers of moths caught in 5 commercial peach orchards varied considerably between traps, and in the 1 unsprayed orchard which had a high number of moths, the pheromone traps gave poor results. It was concluded that, although pheromone traps can be used to time spray applications, they cannot be used safely to determine whether sprays are required.
