Why the study?
Does fondaparinux safely and effectively prevent VTE recurrence compared to unfractionated heparin or enoxaparin in patients with acute PTE and DVT?
Does fondaparinux safely and effectively prevent VTE recurrence compared to unfractionated heparin or enoxaparin in patients with acute PTE and DVT?
Fondaparinux is a fully synthetic, selective factor Xa inhibitor that provides an effective and safe alternative to unfractionated heparin for the initial treatment of acute PTE and DVT, with the advantage of once-daily fixed dosing without routine coagulation monitoring.
May support fondaparinux as a convenient alternative to UFH in acute PTE; leaves open prospective randomized confirmation.

Suzuki et al. (2012) conducted a review in Venous thromboembolism (pulmonary thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis). Fondaparinux vs. Unfractionated heparin (UFH) or low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was evaluated on VTE recurrence (MATISSE-PE trial) (Difference -1.2%, 95% CI -3.0 to 0.5).
