Newly developed anticoagulants, including indirect and direct factor Xa inhibitors, offer improved stability and efficacy for VTE prophylaxis in the ICU, overcoming the limitations of traditional agents.
Newer anticoagulants such as enoxaparin, fondaparinux, and direct Xa inhibitors offer more stable pharmacokinetics for VTE prevention in the ICU compared to traditional options, though bleeding management remains a consideration.

Iba et al. (2012) conducted a review in Venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the ICU. Newly developed anticoagulants (indirect and direct factor Xa inhibitors) vs. Traditional anticoagulants (unfractionated heparin, warfarin) was evaluated. Newly developed anticoagulants, including indirect and direct factor Xa inhibitors, offer improved stability and efficacy for VTE prophylaxis in the ICU, overcoming the limitations of traditional agents.
