The equilibriums lawsonite ⇌ zoisite + kyanite + quartz + vapor and zoisite + sillimanite + quartz ⇌ anorthite + vapor have been determined in the temperature range 500° to 950°C and in the pressure range 7 to 33 kb. The results indicate an invariant point involving the phases lawsonite, anorthite, zoisite, sillimanite, quartz, and vapor at 5.4 kb and 410°C. The course of the equilibrium lawsonite ⇌ anorthite + water in the range of geologic interest has been estimated from the present data. A few applications to regional metamorphism and the mechanism of batholith formation are discussed.
