A greenish yellow-emitting phosphor Ba 2 Gd(BO 3 ) 2 Cl:Eu 2+ was synthesized by a conventional high temperature solid-state method. The phase structure was studied by the X-ray diffraction, and it testified that Ba 2 Gd(BO 3 ) 2 Cl belonged to the successful isomorphic substitution for Gd 3+ sites in the Ba 2 Yb(BO 3 ) 2 Cl host, which crystallized in a monoclinic unit cell with space group P2 1 /m . The photoluminescence properties investigations showed that Ba 2 Gd(BO 3 ) 2 Cl:Eu 2+ showed greenish yellow emission with peak near 546 nm upon near UV excitation. The critical quenching concentration of Eu 2+ in Ba 2 Gd(BO 3 ) 2 Cl:Eu 2+ phosphor was about 0.05 mol%, and the corresponding concentration quenching mechanism was verified to be the electric dipole–quadrupole interaction. We have demonstrated that Ba 2 Gd(BO 3 ) 2 Cl:Eu 2+ phosphors exhibit potential to act as a kind of phosphor for near ultraviolet white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs).
