Overview

May enable field assessment of cardiac vagal tone; leaves open validation against clinical outcomes before routine use.

Structured PICO

P
Population
11 healthy nonsmokers (5 males, 6 females), mean age 22.0 years, mean BMI 20.5 kg/m2.
I
Intervention
Paced breathing at constant frequencies (0.18-0.33 Hz) and nonpaced regular breathing, assessed at various times after meals.
O
Outcome
Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) amplitude (C-CVRSA) as a function of breathing frequency.surrogate

Standardizing respiratory sinus arrhythmia amplitude to a breathing frequency of 0.25 Hz provides a reliable, simple method for assessing cardiac parasympathetic activity during nonpaced breathing.

Limitations

  • Based on data for young, healthy, and nonobese nonsmokers
  • Remains to be determined whether the method can be applied to the aged, the obese and/or heavy smokers
