Hexanal, and to a lesser degree nonanal, added in gaseous form induce coremia formation in the blue stain fungus Ceratocystis piceae (Münch) Bakshi grown in axenic agar culture. The optimum initial concentration of hexanal in the gas phase proved to be c. 2 mg/1 (2 × 10−5M). Possible ecological implications are discussed.
