Complete dehydration of plant material can be accomplished in one step for plastic-embedded samples by immersal in 2,2-dimethoxypropane (DMP). This chemical reacts with any water present to form methanol and acetone. It can be used in combination with a number of easily prepared fixatives, including 10% paraformaldehyde. paraformaldehyde–glutaraldehyde, and formalin – acetic acid – alcohol (FAA). The fixation image after use of DMP is not visibly different from that of other dehydrating procedures presently in common use.
