Electromagnetics (EM) has today become a critical part of the microwave design cycle. This article briefly traces the entry of EM into microwave design and describes how today's design cycle arose. Then, we discuss how recent developments (in particular, perfectly calibrated ports in EM analysis) open entire new areas of applied microwave design.
