“Green” or clean technologies carry different meanings. From devices which have a lower environmental impact to technologies which enable a transition to more sustainable and circular industries across sectors, green electronics span a wide range of fundamental and applied technologies. The challenges associated with electronics sustainability are highly inter-disciplinary, requiring collaborative and novel research directions to be highlighted and discussed. In the new “Green RF Engineering” column, we aim to highlight an array of green RF and green RF-enabled solutions. Across the microwave community, areas such as wireless power transfer, RF sensing, and microwave processing in industrial applications can play a major role in solving sustainability challenges such as climate change [1], and critical raw material (CRM) shortages [2]. In addition, making RF electronics more sustainable through low-impact materials, recycling, and design-for-circularity is an emerging research direction, to be guided by full life cycle considerations [3].
