Lignin-derived phenols (LDFs) can increase the generation of free radicals and consequently the degradation of organic pollutants in Fenton processes due to the abilities of these phenols to reduce Fe 3+ ions. This study analyzed the participation of six LDFs as mediators in the degradation of diazo dye Bismarck Brown Y using Fenton reagents (H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ or Fe 3+ ions). The degradation was evaluated through decolorization of the dye in solution using UV/visible spectrophotometry. The effect of LDFs for the Fenton reaction (Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 ) was little expressive, while for the Fenton-like reaction (Fe 3+ /H 2 O 2 ) their presences considerably increased the decolorization of the dye. For example, the presence of syringaldehyde increased the decolorization from 22% to 60% after 60 min of treatment. In addition, correlation between data of decolorization and consumption of H 2 O 2 in the treatments was observed.
