Multi-criteria decision analysis reveals dual-fuel natural gas and diesel engines as the optimal heavy-duty vehicle choice in freight logistics, indicating an effective pathway to cut emissions.
Environmental sustainability and reduction of carbon emissions have become important and essential in the logistics sector as in many other public and private sectors. Transportation is the most energy consuming activity among all logistics activities. Using less energy-consuming transportation vehicles, reducing carbon emissions and creating energy-efficient facilities are some of the strategies used to alleviate these environmental issues. The purpose of this research is to develop a decision support model for selection of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) and determining the criteria needed for this selection in the scope of green logistics. In the propose Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) model, the selection criteria and their importance were determined by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The criteria and their degrees of importance obtained by AHP method were used in Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. Selection was made by using TOPSIS method among three types of vehicles which are mono compressed natural gas (Mono-CNG) powered vehicles, CNG-Diesel dual fuel powered vehicles and diesel-powered vehicles. CNG-Diesel dual fuel powered vehicles occurred as most preferable.
