Systematic literature review reveals multidimensional strategic and operational impacts of the twin digital and green transition in organizations, highlighting the critical role of governance.
The twin digital and green transition has emerged as a defining challenge for organizations. However, the literature remains fragmented, with limited integration across theoretical perspectives and insufficient understanding of the organizational impacts regarding the diverse aspects of the twin digital and green transition. To address this gap, this study investigates the following research question: What is the impact of the dual digital and green transition on organizations? The study employs a PRISMA-based systematic literature review, combining bibliometric and content analysis of 27 peer-reviewed articles published between 2022 and 2026, retrieved from web of science, scopus, and the association for computing machinery (ACM) digital library. The bibliometric analysis maps the evolution of the field, revealing a shift from technology-centric studies toward more integrated and multidisciplinary approaches. The content analysis demonstrates that the impact of the dual transition is multi-dimensional, extending across strategic, operational, capability-based, governance, and cultural/human domains. The study contributes theoretically by integrating fragmented evidence into a multidimensional conceptual understanding of the twin digital and green transition. From a practical perspective, it provides organizations with insights into aligning digitalization and sustainability strategies through the development of organizational capabilities. From a policy perspective, the findings emphasize the importance of governance mechanisms and institutional support in enabling more effective and sustainable transition pathways. The results identify key literature gaps, particularly regarding cross-context generalizability, governance mechanisms, and system-level sustainability outcomes. A future research agenda for advancing more integrative and empirically grounded approaches to the dual digital and green transition is also outlined.
