Qualitative study reveals the vital role of consistent mentoring in youth exiting foster care, highlighting key targets for programmatic and policy modifications.
Lack of support for youth exiting foster care can be detrimental to the launch into emerging adulthood; supportive relationships can improve this transition. Data was collected through interviews with providers (n = 17) and focus groups with youth (n = 4 focus groups; 28 youth) between January-March 2024. Thematic analysis was used to guide analysis. Four themes identified were (1) youth and provider strengths, (2) youth challenges, (3) service challenges, and (4) support through mentoring/modeling. Time and consistent support are critical for successful transition out of foster care and into adulthood. Findings provide guidance on important domains for the modifications to policies and programs.
