Simulation study demonstrates complete hypoglycemia prevention in type 1 diabetes models, suggesting safer glycemic control for pediatric populations.
It is the biggest challenge for control algorithms developed to regulate blood sugar in patients with type 1 diabetes, regulating blood sugar without causing hypoglycemia. It requires the addition of numerous modules to the control algorithm for eliminating hypoglycemia, which is much more dangerous for children. In this study, a simple control algorithm that can prevent hypoglycemia without having complex control components was developed. This algorithm has been tested and validated in a 200-hour closed-loop scenario on T1DMS, FDA-approved UVA/PADOVA simulator software. The control algorithm presented in this study was able to prevent hypoglycemia by 100% and keep blood sugar within the target range by 90%. It is hoped that this algorithm may be particularly useful in pediatric patients lacking hypoglycemia awareness skills.
