Field evaluation demonstrates self-administered testing detects hearing aid benefits in real-world environments, suggesting reliable out-of-laboratory assessment.
Hearing aid benefit is typically assessed in highly controlled laboratory environments. While this approach leads to reliable and reproducible results, it lacks representation of real-world characteristics and daily-life challenges. In this study, a portable setup for systematic benefit assessment outside of the laboratory is introduced and evaluated. It consists of a software framework for self-administered hearing tests and an integrated hearing aid signal processing platform. Within this study, both audiological measurements and subjective assessments in real-world environments are made with this setup to evaluate its ability to capture a hearing aid benefit and differences between distinct hearing aid settings. Preliminary data show promising results as amplified settings on average perform better than a non-amplified setting with few exceptions.
