A tubeless tracheostomy technique has been developed for long-term canine laryngeal experimentation. Strict adherence to the guidelines set forth, and avoidance of pittalls discussed should allow an investigator to count on only 10% to 15% mortality from long-term tracheostomy in dogs. Furthermore, tracheostomy care for these animals should be minimized drastically. Canine research in this difficult area of the airway will hopefully be facilitated.
