Incorporation of sodium sulfate S 35 by cryopreserved and fresh corneal grafts was studied in vivo. Penetrating homokeratoplasties were performed in rabbits and the corneas were labeled at different time intervals after surgery. Radioautographs showed negligible or no 35 S incorporation by cryopreserved grafts 24 hours after transplantation. Isotope incorporation in cryopreserved grafts increased with time after surgery and at one month approximated the uptake of the host tissue. When fresh tissue was used, 35 S uptake by donor and host were comparable 24 hours after grafting.
