In a previous paper (Crabbé, 1955), the important role of the phagocytic function of macrophages in immunity was described, and observations were reported on the influence of Cortisone on the defence mechanisms. It was established that this hormone inhibits the phagocytosis of pathogenetic organisms by macrophages, when these are obtained from rabbits treated with Cortisone – furthermore, that this is due to an effect on the cells themselves and not to the phagocytic-promoting factors of the serum.
