On the basis of the earlier necropsy examinations, the general opinion became well established that emphysema produced a barrier within the pulmonary circulation which led to hypertrophy of the right ventricle and frequently to congestive heart failure. This opinion gained general approval but in recent years considerable doubt has been raised concerning this previously established view. The historical background of this problem has been reviewed so excellently in a recent paper by Parkinson and Hoyle1that it is only...References1. PARKINSONHOYLE JC: The heart in emphysema, Quart.
