The behavior of metals and alloys under neutron irradiation in a reactor is investigated. An explanation of how damage originates from the collision and absorption of neutrons by nuclei, and a description of the behavior of the fast ions, produced from these neutron encounters, as they penetrate the surrounding material are given. The estimated amount of damage is compared with measured values. Annealing of the damage in which displaced atoms gradually migrate back into lattice positions under the action of thermal agitation is discussed. The effects of irradiation on the mechanical properties of metals and alloys are discussed. Radiation growth in uranium and the effects of irradiation on the corrosion resistance of metals are discussed. (W.D.M.)
