Zero energy gaps for deep one-dimensional periodic potentials

Analysis of the Kronig–Penney model and of computer results for more general one-dimensional periodic potentials shows that, for certain depths of the potential wells, zero band gaps occur under conditions similar to those existing in real ’’free-electron’’ metals.
