The structure and growth of tin and lead oxide particles prepared in different mixtures of Ar and O2 at a total pressure of 13 kPa were studied by electron microscopy. At partial oxygen pressures below 4 kPa, SnO particles were formed, while above 4 kPa, SnO2 particles were formed. Fine SnO2 crystals were produced on the surfaces of the SnO particles by a topotactic relation represented by (001)SnO//(111)SnO2 and [11̄0]SnO//[011̄]SnO2 . α-PbO and β-PbO particles were predominantly formed below and above an oxygen pressure of 1.3 kPa, respectively. The size distribution of these particles and the distribution of the angle between the lattices of joined particles are presented, and the coalescence growth among the particles is discussed.
