In previous work it was found that Cl repulsion by arid‐zone soi's from a solution having a high and uniform concentration of Cl is closely related to surface area as measured by ethylene glycol retention. Based on this information, a measurement of Cl repulsion has been incorporated into the NaOAc method for determining cation‐exchange capacity. As a result, values for surface area, as well as cation‐exchange capacity, can be obtained with but little additional analytical work, except for soils high in kaolinite and sesquioxides.
