With the aid of a new formula for the internal field a method is developed for computing the mean polarisability and the mean radius of molecules and ions from measurements of the density and the dielectric constant (or, alternatively, the index of refraction) of liquids. As examples, the radii and the polarisabilities of the CCl4‐molecule and of the I‐, CL−, Cs+ and Rb+ ions are calculated. The values obtained for the radii of the ions are in good agreement with those of Pauling and Goldschmidt.
