Approximate calculations were made in order to obtain the force exerted on a specimen and its power absorption in levitation melting. The influence of the electrical and geometrical parameters is discussed and the results were verified experimentally. It was possible to derive a number of criteria which allow the systematic adaptation of a levitation apparatus to a certain experimental problem by varying the relevant parameters.
