The interfacial polyamidation reaction between phthaloyl chloride and piperazine and the interfacial polyesterification reaction between phthaloyl chloride and 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol were found to be second‐order at 0°C. Studies with C14‐labeled phthaloyl chloride and with piperazine in one case and with 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol in the other case showed no isotope effect. However, the interfacial monoamidation reaction between carboxy C14‐labeled benzoyl chloride and morpholine gave an isotope effect of 0.950. These results are interpreted, and a mechanism is proposed for the interfacial polycondensation reactions.
