Effects of nine anions and/or the organic cation, tetra‐n‐butyl‐ammonium ion on the corrosion rate of an iron electrode in and adsorption behaviors of these ions on the electrode were studied by impedance measurements. The corrosion process was either inhibited or stimulated by the addition of anions to the solution, while suppressed by the simultaneous addition of the organic cation. Regardless of the inhibition or stimulation, most of the anions were adsorbed on the electrode at the corrosion potential. Surface coverage of the anions obtained from double layer capacitance was confirmed, both in the presence and absence of the cation, to be closely related to the hard and soft acids and bases principle.
