In most patients the disorder arises from a tumor (adenoma) of the anterior pituitary gland that secretes excessive amounts of growth hormone, causing increased levels in serum (1). Because the disease is infrequent, its epidemiology is not well documented. Although 300 new cases are estimated to occur per year in the United States (1), a recent study has suggested that this figure should be closer to 900 (2).
