The conditions of polycondensation of dimethyl phosphonate (1) with different diols were elaborated, leading to polymers with molecular weights up to 3,3 · 104. The novelty of the method is based on a two stage process. In the first stage an excess of 1 was used and short chains with methyl ester end groups were produced. These further react with elimination of 1 from the chain ends. In this way the coupling of macromolecules provides high‐molecular‐weight material and side reactions, due to the presence of the diols in the system (e.g. dehydration), are virtually suppressed.
