The Raman scattering spectra of Rb 2 ZnCl 4 single crystals were measured over the temperature range covering the successive phase transitions at T 1 =302 K and T 2 =189 K. The low-lying mode, whose frequency decreases as the prototypic-incommensurate phase transition roint T 1 is approached from below, has been observed for the c ( a a ) b scattering orientation as well as for the a ( c c ) b orientation, and is assigned to the amplitude mode. The results obtained are discussed in connection with the incommensurate phase transition.
