Feulgen's nucleal-staining has been applied to many plants by various authors since it was innovated by According to Westbrook (1930) the chromatin-complex in lower plants was thought to be differently constituted from that in higher plants, but he observed a very good nucleal-reaction in the root-tips of Asplenium sp. Yamaha (1935) obtained a positive nucleal-reaction in the nuclei of the leaf-cell of Equisetum hiemale and Azolla japonica and those of the prothallium-cell of Athyrium nipponicum, while he got a negative reaction in the leaf-cell of Selaginella involvens.
