What are the causes and incidence of complications following brachioplasty?
Hypertrophic scarring is the most common complication after brachioplasty, highlighting the need for improved surgical techniques and individual risk assessment.
Supports individualized risk assessment in brachioplasty; hypothesis-generating without randomized confirmation of preventive strategies.
Objective. To investigate the causes and incidence of complications following brachioplasty and to examine possible treatment options that could reduce the incidence of complications. Material and methods. Searching for literature data was conducted in the PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Cochrane, and eLibrary databases using the keywords, «brachioplasty», «complications», «body contouring», «aesthetic surgery», «plastic surgery». After reading the abstracts, the authors studied full-text Russian- and English-language articles published between 1954 and 2023. Final analysis included 36 articles. Conclusion. Complications were associated with poor surgical technique, inadequate preoperative examination, and lack of individual risk assessment in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The most common complication of brachioplasty was hypertrophic scarring. Thus, there is a need to study treatments that could improve scar quality.
