Hartree-Fock calculations of the s-electron density at the nucleus have been made for a selection of electron configurations in sm I-IV and Eu I-IV chosen for their interest in interpreting observed isotope and isomer shifts. Theoretical screening ratios and core relaxation effects are discussed and compared with those derived by empirical means.
