Qualitative study demonstrates enhanced clinical preparedness and safety skills in nursing students using actor simulations, highlighting the value of interactive de-escalation training.
Nurses need therapeutic communication skills to de-escalate stressful situations. This qualitative study aimed to measure the effectiveness of role-play verbal de-escalation training simulations for Associate of Science degree nursing students. A three-step training process was implemented to teach verbal de-escalation techniques. Simulations were conducted using simulation patients rather than high-fidelity mannequins. Survey and debriefing data were evaluated using qualitative analysis. Student participants showed enhanced critical thinking and clinical preparedness for real patients, improved understanding of pathophysiology, and enhanced safety techniques to improve care in stressful patient situations.
