Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery significantly reduced triglyceride levels (MD -57.27 mg/dl) and improved overall lipid profiles at 3 or more years post-operation.
Why the study?
Laparoscopic gastric sleeve is a key surgical treatment for obesity in Qatar, but its impact on lipid profiles required assessment.

Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery in obese patients is associated with long-term improvements in lipid profiles, particularly sustained reductions in triglycerides and increases in HDL over 5 years.
LGS-linked lipid shifts in obese patients should not yet alter practice; leaves open whether changes improve cardiovascular outcomes.
In Qatar, laparoscopic gastric sleeve (LGS) is a key surgical method for obesity treatment. This study assessed its impact on the lipid profiles of 863 obese patients, some with hyperlipidemia. Spanning five years (2015-2020), the research monitored metrics like total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL). Post-LGS, TC, and LDL levels decreased after three months, increased, and then significantly dropped from the 2nd to the 5th year. TG levels consistently declined over five years, while HDL saw a marked rise from six months to five years post-surgery. In conclusion, LGS positively influenced lipid profiles during certain post-operative periods.

Mustafa et al. (2023) conducted a cohort in Obesity (n=863). Laparoscopic gastric sleeve vs. Pre-operative baseline was evaluated on Triglyceride levels at ≥3 years post-operation (MD -57.27, 95% CI -90.02 to -24.51, p=<0.001). Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery significantly reduced triglyceride levels (MD -57.27 mg/dl) and improved overall lipid profiles at 3 or more years post-operation.
