HE studies on carcinogenic substances from human sources have been summarized by Hieger2.3 and by Steiner.8They report that substances that are carcinogenic for the mouse can be extracted horn the tissues of some humans who die of cancer or of other diseases. The carcinogen was found in the cholesterolrich fraction of such tissues but was not otherwise identified. This paper reports data obtained from a pilot study that was carried out to evaluate the possibility that a chemical carcinogen exists in the bile of living patients who have cancer of the extrahepatic bile ducts.
