The metallurgical behaviour of niobium (columbium &) as an alloying element in austenitic superalloys is characterized. First, superalloys are defined. Next, the properties of nio bium which are useful for superalloy con stitution are reviewed. Finally, the specific function of niobium as an additive to nickel, cobalt and iron sup eralloy s is established and its broad effects summarized.
