SUMMARY Regional thickness and histochemical variations of the matrix of adult canine articular cartilage were studied. In the caudal-central region of the humeral head, differential staining for the presence of keratan sulfate in the territorial matrix of the chondrocytes was closer to the articular surface than in the thinner articular cartilage of the dorsal plateau region. The relevance of these observations to the biomechanical and physiochemical properties of articular cartilage was discussed.
