Plastic deformation was studied in fine‐grained alumina polycrystals (grain sizes 1 to 5 μm); several deformation mechanisms occur simultaneously. This paper is concerned with basal slip and unaccommodated grain‐boundary sliding (GBS). The basal slip can give rise to a deformation texture. Cavitation occurs due to the occurrence of both unaccommodated GBS and basal slip, because of the marked plastic anisotropy of alumina.
