The formal unsteady-state kinetics of a polymerization reaction with first-order initiation and termination by chain transfer with the monomer are solved, and expressions are obtained for number and weight average degrees of polymerization and polymerization rate as a function of time. L. Gold's results for the case of no termination are included as a special case. The qualitative description of the kinetics by a single partial differential equation is also outlined.
