High-pressure excursions during cardiopulmonary bypass occur in about 0.31% of cases, most frequently immediately after initiation, and can be classified into six distinct patterns to guide troubleshooting and potential oxygenator replacement.

Tanabe et al. (2024) conducted an observational in Cardiopulmonary bypass during cardiac surgery (n=5,180). Cardiopulmonary bypass oxygenators was evaluated on Incidence of high-pressure excursion (HPE). High-pressure excursion occurred in 0.31% (16 of 5,180) of cardiopulmonary bypass cases, with 69% occurring immediately after initiation, and could be classified into 6 distinct patterns based on pressure trends and timing.
