A material serving as both matrix and excitation source for atomic emission spectroscopy (AES) is presented in this article. Freshly etched porous silicon is doped with gadolinium nitrate to form an explosive solid, to be loaded with analyte and ignited by coil discharge (see Figure and also front cover for flash upon ignition). With Gd not emitting in the visible region, undisturbed AES spectra of several metals could be recorded.
