A technique has been developed for studying the hyperfine structure of the resonance radiation of mercury. A single Zeeman component of the 2536 A line of Hg¹⁹⁸ is used as a variable-frequency monochromatic light source, and the field strength applied to the arc lamp to produce resonance absorption in a resonance lamp is a measure of the resonance frequency. Natural mercury, and radioactive mercury produced by bombarding gold with 15-Mev deuterons were investigated in this way and also (by means of an echelle spectrograph) in the emission spectrum of an electrodeless discharge. Several observed lines have not been conclusively identified. The magnetic moment of Hg¹⁹⁷ is 4 percent greater than that of Hg¹⁹⁹. The isotope shift of isotopes with even mass number decreases with decreasing mass number. This effect may be due in part to the increasing quadrupole moment with neutron deficiency in these isotopes.
