LTHOUGH there are several histochemical A procedures for the demonstration of esterases in tissue sections,6. 17, 19 there is only one report of the application of one of these methods to a systematic study of acetone-fixed, paraffin-embedded neoplasms in man.4 T h e present study was undertaken to gain information concerning the distribution of esterases in neoplastic and stromal cells using Formalinfixed frozen sections and, in addition, to determine the inhibitory or activating effects of various chemical agents on the esterases of these cells. It will be shown that esterase activity is frequently high in human tumor cells. Observations on the esterase activity in some developmental stages of macrophages are also included.
